Content can mean many things, but in this context, you should simply think of content as - News Articles.  Search engines will scan (crawl) your site for information from time to time, and the more information you put up, the more information the search engine has to use and draw from when ranking your site.  Content is to search engines, what food left out is to stray cats.  And the more you feed, the more they come back.  Keeping your site regularly updated gets the search engines to come back more frequently, and to look deeper and deeper into your site.

Without seeking out and obtaining links to your site, search engines may assume that the information you are providing is useless.  Think of links as votes of confidence.  The more quality links you have, the more confidence a search engine will have in your website.

So is it that easy?
No!  Both processes require extensive knowledge of how search engines work.  When writing content for your site, it is critical to keep  each article focused and ensure that it is relevant to your site.  Without proper direction, your search engine rankings are likely to remain where they are, or bring you traffic that does not convert to sales.  When working on link building, it is extremely important that you be able to recognize and find high quality links.  All links are good links, but if it takes 1000 junk links to equal the power of one good link... and it takes you over an hour to get one link - you can see why it pays to focus your energy on getting high quality links.
