So you thought you had to pay for classified ads? Whether your selling your $20K car or your $5 coffee grinder, there is a spot, craigslist is a place where local sellers and buyers can connect. Ebay is not the only resale solution. Many things just don't make sense to ship, or do not warrant the price that Ebay will charge to sell your stuff. Austin has a particularly exciting reason to take advantage of Craigslist. Every summer practically every one of the 50K+ students at UT either take jobs, move back home, or change apartments. This means that there are a ton of students stuck with a bunch of furniture and no place to put it. I've seen students offer TV's, couches, tables, computer desks, bedroom sets and more for a fraction of their original price - and sometimes completely free! But with any great thing, not all is well. Unscrupulous advertisers have become the plague of craigslist and have absolutely nothing to lose. Again, since craigslist is free - all it takes is an email address and you're off to start posting whatever you want. Craigslist is an anomaly in regards to the proportion of staff to visitors. This is one of my favorite charts I have seen in a while which marks the most visited websites along with the number of employees they maintain.
Because there is such a small staff, there are no moderators who patrol the listings to remove spam and other undesirable postings. This means that it is up to the public to self moderate the forums and report listings that need to be removed! To visit Austin's Craigslist, simply go to http://austin.craigslist.com |
