What is Page Rank? Why is it important? |
|
|
|
As quoted by Google:
PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using
its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value.
In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote,
by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume
of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that
casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important"
weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important".
Take the following scenario. You are a college student who needs to do a report about the Internal Revenue Service. In your paper, it is very likely that you will cite the IRS as a source for your work. And in much the opposite way, the IRS would be highly unlikely to cite your research paper in any of its work.
Google has taken this natural phenomenon as a way to measure the importance of every web page in its database. The more your work is cited as a reference on other websites, the more credibility your work is given.
But it is not only quantity that is important, quality is a very significant player in this arena. Take the two red smileys as an example. Each of them only have a single reference...however those references come from very credible sources. Because the quality of those reference is so much greater, this work is assigned a much higher credibility than those sites which receive a large amount of low quality references.
But why is it important? Google uses Page Rank as a significant factor in organizing the results of a given query to its search engine. Take the smiley example above and assume all these pages describe the same topic. The green smileys have very little credibility since no others reference them. The yellow smiley would be considered the most significant work on the topic as many others cite it as a reference. If you want your website to rank in the search engines, page rank is one of the many critical fundamentals to understand.

A good web development firm should help their clients develop a website that helps customers to resolve their situations without needing to directly contact the company. Spending the time to implement a well organized system can increase the costs of a website, but how much can it save?
According to Celent, a Boston-based consulting firm, it costs $6.85 per
call to serve a customer compared with $4.95 for e-mail and 50 cents by
Internet. Banks on average spend more than $5,000 to hire and train one
agent. Large companies realize the return on their website investment almost immediately. With some call centers employing over 1000 individuals, a well organized website could save tens of thousands of dollars each and every day. However, small and medium sized business would be well served to follow the lead of the larger companies.
Take the following scenario: a small e-commerce website receives approximately 50 calls and 50 emails per day for product questions, order inquiries, billing questions, etc. According to these numbers, the website owners would be spending over $500 each day to handle customer support. This translates to near $200k per year in lost profits.
Simple changes to a site can have a dramatic effect on support volume. Even a 10% reduction in call volume would have a dramatic impact on the bottom line. In fact, many customers are agitated by being forced to speak to an agent. An improvement to the website by the right development firm could mean increased customer satisfaction, higher profits, not to mention the reduction in human error and miscommunication.

The Ipod Of Websites - What A Good CMS Can Do |
|
|
|
Ask just about any American over five years old what an Ipod is and its quite likely they'll pull one right out of their pocket. Not every mp3 player has enjoyed such great success as the Ipod. Quite similarly - not every website enjoys the success the owners had hoped for. But how on earth could a website and Ipod be related?
There are accessories available today which can transform an Ipod into a home stereo, calculator, gaming console, video player, video recorder, camera, car stereo, or even track your running performance. Anything you want, odds are you can find some sort of accessory to take care of it for you. The reason for this is the modularity / plug and play capability of the Ipod. Anything that is plugged into the Ipod can access the system controls, memory, processing power, and output. The Ipod acts as the core of the system, and can be almost infinitely upgraded with accessories. Unfortunately, this is not the case with most business websites.
Time after time we come across website owners who have paid to have their website hand coded from the bottom up. As the needs of the business owner change to meet new demands or changing market conditions, they often find that their expensive proprietary system is now useless. These business owners would have been well advised to avoid those costly custom developments and enter the new world of content management systems (CMS).
A good CMS allows a site administrator to make changes on the fly without any knowledge of HTML or programming. Want to add shopping cart functionality? Simply plug in a shopping cart component. Looking to add a slick new flash photo gallery? It can be done in five clicks. Even if you want to change the entire look and feel of the site, you can watch the change between the blink of an eye. Just like an Ipod, if you need something new, it is possible to do it with an accessory rather than a whole new system. When looking for a web designer to help with your project, ask them to give you a tour of the CMS they recommend. If you hear anything other than a prompt cheerful response, it might be time to continue your search elsewhere.
